Namshi is the Middle East’s online shopping destination for fashion and lifestyle, and this year it has gone through a shake-up.

Namishi was first founded by Mekki, along with Louis Lebbos; Hosam Arab; Hisam Zarka and Faraz Khalid.

Back in 2012, Namshi secured $20m in financing from JP Morgan Chase and Blakeney Management, with Muhammed Mekki, one of the original founders of Namshi, calling the investment a turning point.

The following year, Namshi secured a further $13m in funding through growth equity firm Summit Partners, with the investment used to scale up operations and move to another warehouse space, which was being shares with Amamex.

This year, Global Fashion Group (GFG) and Emaar Malls partnered to further the development of Namshi. Emaar acquired 51% of Namshi for an all-cash transaction of $151m, this means that Emaar Malls will offer additional fashion brands, further develop its logistics infrastructure and expand its geographical footprint. GFG's will offer its knowledge in fashion e-commerce and shared resources such as IT development and innovation.

Namshi’s founders all hold interesting pasts, with career backgrounds ranging from Google to McKinsey.

Hisham Zarka, was previously in software development at Google, but later moved to Mckinsey & Companny as a consultant. He then joined Rocket Internet GmbH and served as the managing director of the Middle East and North Africa region. In 2011, he then became the co-founder and managing director of Namshi. Zarka holds degrees in Computer Science and Business Administration from the University of California, Berkeley.

In 2002, Hosam Arab was field engineer at Schlumberger and in 2005 he moved to General Electric where his was role was project engineer. He moved to Waha Capital as an associate and then in 2011 became the co-founder and managing director of Namshi. Arab has a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Queen’s university and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

The third co-founder and managing director of Namshi is Faraz Khalid, who this year joined Mohamed Alabbar’s ecommerce platform Noon as CEO. In his new position he is responsible for improving Noon’s infrastructure, particularly in Saudi Arabia, building its tech platform, and establishing partnerships. Khalid has an MBA from the Wharton School and has a degree in Electronics Engineering.

Louis Lebbos and Muhammed Mekki, also the original founders of Namshi, left to form start-up ecosystem AstroLabs.
