While Matar Mohammed Al Tayer has a background as a professional civil engineer, he oversees an organisation and an executive team which has embraced technology in all its forms across many of its different areas of operations.

The Roads & Transport Authority is responsible for public and private transport services and infrastructure across Dubai, covering almost all of Smart Dubai’s transport initiatives. As head of the RTA, Al Tayer plays a leading role in guiding the organisation in the smart transformation of transport in the emirate.

In February this year, the RTA announced an extensive new five-year digital plan, which will build on its existing achievements in the digital sphere, and align the organisation to utilise the latest technologies which are changing the face of transportation, such as drones, robotics and autonomous vehicles.

Al Tayer has been at the head of the RTA since its inception in 2005, and previously held roles with Dubai Municipality, including Deputy Director General. He is also a Member of the Executive Council of Dubai Government and holds a number of positions government organisations such as Dubai Sports Council, the Expo 2020 Preparatory Committee and the Dubai Future Foundation.
