Muammar Alkatheeri is responsible for one of the leading ‘real-world’ deployments of smart city concepts, in his role at the Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority.

Established in 2004, Dubai Silicon Oasis was created as a free zone for ICT and technology-focused companies, but has grown into an important centre both for the IT industry and for smart city development and real world deployments. Silicon Oasis is home to some 2,000 companies and 65,000 people, and Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority continues to create new initiatives to expand into new areas.

Last year, DSOA expanded its smart goals, with the launch of the 2021 Strategy, with strategic aims across smart cities and smart living, advanced technologies and happiness. DSO now includes initiatives in areas such as laboratories and test environments for R&D into new technologies, the Dubai Technology Entrepreneur Centre (DTEC) for technology incubation and education initiatives focused on smart city with RIT.

Alkatheeri, an architect by profession, has a number of responsibilities and roles within DSOA, including oversight for some of its ambitious smart city plans including Silicon Park, a multi-purpose development in smart cities. He joined DSOA in 2006 and worked in a number of roles within the organisation, taking on his current role as EVP for Engineering and Smart Cities in July 2015. Previously he has held engineering and management roles across public and private sector including telecoms and real estate.
